Who gets funded? DEI, Language, and access to capital

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) may not be my primary focus — I’m more immersed in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks, sustainability strategy, and storytelling. But DEI is deeply intertwined with these topics, whether we realize it or not.

If you know me, you know this reflection turned into an article

If you’re new, welcome! This is a space where reflections tend to turn into articles.

Recently, the backlash against DEI in the United States caught my attention. And because what happens in the US rarely stays confined there, I started to wonder: If the country that shaped DEI is stepping back, what does this mean globally?

This edition of Raise explores the evolving state of DEI around the world, with perspectives from the US, Europe, and emerging markets.

DEI Today: Different Outcomes Across the Globe

Think of this as a mini global road-trip:

  • 🇺🇸 United States: The birthplace of modern DEI. While some companies are retreating from DEI initiatives, many continue to push forward. Special thanks to Julianne Zimmerman, Co-CEO of Adasina Social Capital, for sharing her valuable insights on the US landscape.

  • 🇫🇷 France & 🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Crossing the Atlantic, we find differing views in Europe. Grace Moronfulu MBE, an EDI specialist and Director at Carbonado Consultancy, sheds light on how DEI is evolving in the UK. Despite changes, DEI remains a vital part of many conversations.

  • Language Matters: In some sectors, particularly finance, DEI language is shifting or even disappearing, though initiatives continue under different names.

When Language Becomes a Barrier

Why does this matter? The shift in terminology can limit understanding and access — especially in emerging markets.

I share a case study highlighting entrepreneurs from emerging countries who face challenges due to language barriers — showing that words are more than semantics; they can restrict access to capital and opportunity.
